Menagerie is one of Manchester’s most talked-about restaurants, and for good reason. This Spinningfields venue is a riot of gaudy chandeliers, dangling light bulbs, tongue-in-cheek Greek sculptures and trompe l’oeil flocks of birds, with an enormous catwalk dividing the dining area down the middle. This is where scantily clad performers put on shows throughout the night – expect anything from trapeze artists to burlesque acts. The menu offers up a diverse range of world cuisine, from gourmet sliders, lightly spiced chicken milanese and sea bass tempura with edamame purée to crispy duck salad and brunch favourites such as Cajun eggs Benedict or the medianoche sandwich – a ham, mustard, Swiss cheese and truffle combo popular in Havana nightclubs. A huge drinks list and an ever-changing line-up of flashy cocktails mean it’s also ideal if you fancy lingering after the plates are cleared, but don’t be put don’t be put off by the ostentatious glamour – Menagerie is gloriously OTT, and proud of it.
