SquareMeal Review of Indigo

Bronze Award

Indigo’s executive chef Dominic Teague has masterminded a quiet revolution at One Aldwych’s smart mezzanine restaurant, where the menu incorporates only the finest of seasonal ingredients carefully sourced from the British Isles. Oh, and it also happens to be entirely dairy and gluten free, a welcome win for diners with allergens.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that free of gluten and dairy means free of taste though, because while Indigo’s menu has an undeniably healthy appeal, it also features substantial dishes to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. The a la carte changes seasonally, but you might begin your meal with the likes of roast Orkney scallops spiced with cumin and coriander and served alongside Heritage carrot, or perhaps cured trout from Chalk Stream farm, given an added touch of indulgence thanks to a topping of Exmoor caviar.

For your main course, you can choose between the likes of traditional beer-battered fish accompanied by thick-cut chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce, or you can choose to go down roads less travelled with the vegetarian chickpea panisse. There are also a handful of dishes available from the grill - think Loch Duart salmon fillet or 28 day dry aged grass fed beef rib eye, all served with rapeseed bearnaise and a leaf and herb salad. To round things off, tuck into indulgent puddings such as a Baked Alaska or keep it light with a blackberry mousse and apple sorbet.

Meanwhile during weekends you can now enjoy a roast lunch on both Saturdays and Sundays, featuring a selection of top quality meats accompanied by crisp duck fat roasted potatoes, and fluffy Yorkshire puddings.

Friendly staff offer prompt service in the comfortable space overlooking the buzzy Lobby Bar below, while a good-value set menu (£22/£27 for two/three courses) is another plus.

Consistent good food and brilliant service. Great for those who want a totally gluten free meal.

Creative and great tasting free-from food which doesn't hurt my tummy! The venue itself it lovely and relaxed and again I don't have to worry about what is going in my mouth!

Every time I have frequented Indigo at One Aldwych, has always been an absolute pleasure. The food and service is faultless. I would even go as far to say that this is probably my favourite London Restaurant. I have been for dinners, lunches and afternoon tea and even used the cinema room. On each occasion we were looked after extremely well.

Very suitable for pre-theatre meal
We had dinner for 2 at 6pm on a Friday evening. On the balcony area it was modestly noisy, arising from the bar below, but never enough to preclude conversation. 2 2-course meals from a fair selection, plus 2 carafes of Merlot and then a Chenin Blanc came to £89 before service charge. Service was attentive and efficient, and we weren't rushed off our feet to make the theatre. All in all, beautiful ( a bit like the musical!).

Excellent breakfast
I was fortunate to be treated to breakfast here this morning. The restaurant overlooks the lobby/bar area and is very light and airy, with comfy armchairs to relax in. The service was impeccable, with emphasis on explaining their gluten and dairy free options (which I didn't have, but was told by my companion that they are amazing, particularly the muffins and chocolate mousse). I had a perfectly cooked cheese omelette with a side of excellent streaky bacon and a cappuccino, which has certainly set me up for the day. A very nice calm oasis in the middle of bustling Covent Garden/Aldwych.

Lovely afternoon tea let down by poor service
We visited Indigo to sample the much hyped Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afternoon tea. Things started well. We were greeted and shown to our table by a friendly waiter and offered drinks. All the places are set out beautifully, each with it's own sort of cartoon place mat of different Charlie and the Chocolate Factory characters. The food itself was very nice but the experience was let down by the service. There seemed to be plenty of staff but never anyone free or visible when you needed anything. Drinks were slow in arriving and we waited a long time for our bill, in the end having to go up to the greeter and request it for a third time. Furthermore, there seemed to be very rigid timings. The savouries were brought straight away when we arrived but then all the sweet courses for each table arrived at once and we had to wait over half an hour in between the savouries and sweets. You just can't operate like that, not every table will want the second course at the same time. That said, the savouries were excellent and the sweets and scones perfect for anyone with a serious sweet tooth.

We have now eaten here twice in the last month, both times as a pre-theatre venue. On both occasions we have had an very good meal choosing from both the set price menu and the a la carte. Fish has been particularly good. Service is efficient but unobtrusive tho' sometimes a little slow to ‘get going’. However my requests at booking to be finished by a certain time have obviously been noted and are acted on without further reminders on arrival. We have also sampled the cocktail bar which is certainly not cheap but fun and again staffed by friendly and efficient people. For a central London venue with (presumably) a lot of passing trade this could be an off hand and overpriced joint. The former is certainly not true and the apart from the wine nor is the latter. I paid more last week for a meal in Norwich!
