When ‘last orders’ were called at The Lord Cardigan in October 2015, locals bemoaned the demise of yet another cherished boozer. Fast forward one year: overhauled, spruced up and rebadged, the 150-year-old stalwart is facing a bright future. Under the same owners as The Garrison SE1 and Walkers of Whitehall, The Goose is worth a gander for its dandified Victorian interior and vast beer garden. Choose from 10 keg beers, many brewed locally; barrel-aged Negroni and Manhattan, Smoked Maple Old Fashioned and London Grog (gin, grapefruit and Pilsner). House Viognier at under £20 heads an appealing wine list. Snack on ’nduja croquettes; or charred cauliflower with tahini, raisins and pine nuts. Mains typically include lamb with coco beans, tomatoes and salsa verde, and various robata-grill options. Greengage and vanilla cream meringue is how to round off supper. The pub currently opens for lunch Fri-Sun, with weekday lunch opening planned soon.
