SquareMeal Review of Evuna Deansgate

There’s a markedly good synergy between wine and food at Evuna, one of Manchester’s more venerable Spanish restaurants (established 2003), which has its roots in a wine import business. The Deansgate original – there’s now one in the Northern Quarter, too – has the bare bricks and exposed pipework of that decade when loft-style industrial regeneration was all the rage. The look suits the easy-going repertoire of tapas greatest hits, bolstered by paellas, the signature sea bass baked in salt and filleted at the table, and a good-value tapas lunch menu that appeals to the Deansgate office crowd. Try the Galician-style hake with potatoes, celery, garlic and parsley broth, or duck in an aged port sauce – and take advantage of the in-house expertise when it comes to the entirely Spanish, enticingly priced wine list. If you like your choice, buy a bottle to take home from the small on-site shop.
