This handsome old pub in pretty Pilsley, on the Duke of Devonshire’s Estate, has had a careful facelift overseen by the design-conscious Duchess: some of the old (and much loved) features now sit
happily with cool contemporary touches – although the comfort factor hasn’t been diminished one jot. Chef Alan Hill sends out simply cooked, nicely presented and terrific-value dishes, with many of
the ingredients sourced from the excellent Chatsworth Farm Shop in the village. Start perhaps with smooth game and blueberry pâté with chutney before tackling slow-cooked corned beef hash with
homemade ketchup; alternatively, a plate of glorious, rib-sticking faggots should set you up for a stroll through the magnificent park. The inn is also noted for its local ales, sound wines and
