With colourful cushions, crates and oil drums fashioned into seats, plus walls decorated with hammocks and flip-flops, Cabana brings vibrant Brazilian beach life to central Manchester. It’s a lively new spot occupying two floors in the Corn Exchange: great for groups, but equally enjoyable for couples – especially if you love barbecued meats. Signature malagueta char-grilled chicken wings (spicy, slightly sweet and sticky, with heat from a chilli marinade) tasted satisfyingly of flame and fire yet remained juicy and tender. Don’t ignore long-cooked dishes, though: the Brazilian classic of feijoada (a smoky, heart-warming black-bean stew) was packed with tender pulled pork, sausage and rib meat, and arrived with comforting biro-biro rice seasoned with shallots, garlic and herbs. For an indulgent, creamy but light ending, try the banana and doce de leite cheesecake, topped with roasted almonds. Add to all this the multitudinous caipirinhas and it’s easy to forget you’re in Manchester.
