SquareMeal Review of Bosun's Locker
The wind whips along the street at the tip of the Furness Peninsula, where the ferry comes to take you across the bay to Piel Island. The slightly scruffy Bosun’s Locker has been here for years, & is a renowned haven for walkers, twitchers, cyclists & windsurfers – despite being little more than a glorified wooden shack. With salt-encrusted windows it’s not the most edifying exterior, but step inside & be delighted; pine tables, wooden floors, & Bryan Ferry warbling in the background put you in the mood for chunky paninis, wholesome soups or the fully blown Bosun’s afternoon tea (£6.25), complete with sandwiches, home-baked cakes & fruit scones. Elsewhere, giant Yorkshire puds with roast beef & veg are outstanding value, as is the wine – from just £2 a glass. Oh, & you can play ‘spot the TV chef’ – one of the Hairy Bikers lives across the road.
