SquareMeal Review of Blueprint Café

Bronze Award

“On the button… I really rate this place!” enthuses one fan of the Blueprint Café – a bright, airy eatery floating above the Thames. A row of tables along one wall offers “fabulous” river views, although the main draw is top-notch cooking at prices that “don’t even break the bank”. The seasonal carte kicks off with crowd-pleasers such as potted duck with piccalilli or beetroot and goats’ curd salad, while mains have a sturdy patriotic feel – think chicken and leek pie, whole plaice with chips or Colne Valley lamb rump with cockles and samphire. There are “fabulously creamy” risottos too, while desserts offer yoghurt pannacotta and lemon cheesecake alongside lemon posset and Eton mess. The overall feel is sleek, efficient and a tad corporate (as you might expect from a D&D London outlet), although there’s no strain on the wallet: “go for their lunch menu!” recommends one price-conscious fan.

About

The Blueprint café offers stunning views, from its large floor to ceiling glass window, of the Thames and Tower Bridge. It is superbly located in Bermondsey, surrounded by the hubbub of south London. The café also serves up some amazing British fare to go with that view of the London skyline.

The interior of the restaurant is sleek and sophisticated, with minimalist table settings and décor throughout the restaurant, to really let the stunning view take centre stage, the London skyline makes for a great backdrop to any dining occasion at the Blueprint Café. The dining spot is opening every day from noon, for lunch and dinner. Start off the resplendent affair with a delicious cocktail, such as the fairytale martini featuring Tanqueray gin, cranberry, and elderflower.

The menu starts of strop with shellfish minestrone and an aged beef tartare, which whet the appetite for more delicious eats to come. The main courses may see you dining on Gloucester old spot pork chops served with caramelised onion, potato puree, and jus. Or for a vegetarian option, the mushroom pearl barley risotto is a great choice, while the roast duck is a sumptuous affair complemented by braised red endives and sharp pink grapefruit.

For afters, settle in with a wholesome carrot cake or an apple and pecan pie while the view of the skyline shifts to night-mode and the city is lit up. Order from the extensive wine list, which features a European-led mix of sparkling, white, and red wines, plus there are some sweet wines to go with dessert.

This D&D restaurant is a superb choice for a variety of dining occasions from impressive dates to dining out with friends to celebrate a birthday. You can’t go wrong with seating either, as the restaurant offers panoramic views throughout the restaurant, guaranteeing a side of London’s skyline with your meal.

Walk five minutes east from the tourists and Tower Bridge and you will find yourself in Shad Thames. Even to many a Londoner, there is a certain other-worldliness to this place; it speaks of history and the past, a place of secrets and undiscovered potential. Yet, it is well worth a visit. Indeed, on a sunny day in London when outside space is at a premium, a trip to the Blue Print Café (located in the London Design Museum) is a worthwhile excursion. The venue is all white-washed walls and mirrors, and the feel is light and airy. It is, in some ways, more reminiscent of Sydney than London in terms of vibe. And, the views are amazing: look one way, and you have the most famous bridge in town on the foreground, the skyscrapers of the City behind; to the other side, the river extends and Canary Wharf lurks. The dining proposition is simple: fresh modern British food with a hint of acknowledgement towards the continent, all executed highly professionally. I began with fresh asparagus and a poached pheasant's egg, my comrade with scallops. Both pleased highly in terms of presentation and taste. The mains saw a continuation although the cynic would highlight that it is hard to mess up fish & chips (my comrade's option), while I found my salmon (accompanied by prawns and capers) somewhat over-engineered; what it gained in looks, it lost in taste. Our Muscadet, chosen from a sensible and broadly conservative wine list, certainly helped move things along. At £50/head, with a great view and relaxed service, this is a good place, and one still relatively undiscovered.

Quality summer special del for dinner
A group of 4 went at 7pm on a weekday and took advantage of the 2-course meal for £20; it also came with a glass of wine, which arrived at the end of the meal - an unusual English-bottled red which was remarkably drinkable; I think the grapes came from France. We also ordered from the 'adventurous' wine section and had a tasty Macedonian white for £34. One surprise was the pre-meal sampler of pork rillettes, salami and terrine - fine, except that I had ordered terriine followed by pork belly for the meal! Anyway, the courses were hot, good-looking and had sufficient side veg. Of course the view was excellent too.

I really rate this place! It never fails to deliver exactly what it promises: very good food, at great value with a fabulous river view to match! Wines are interesting and well priced, wide choice of dishes and everything prepared with thought and attention. For a change I chose the cauliflower risotto with Perigord truffles - a fabulously creamy blend of flavours.

Blueprint cafe – one of my favourite lazy lunch spots! A great view of the thames and Tower Bridge – with the lovely touch of mini binoculours on each table… very quaint. It is definitely a cafe/ canteen feel to this place, although the service is great. We had lovely British seasonal food at decent prices, and spent a long leisurely lunch here without being rushed or made to feel unworthy since we werent really drinking. The fact that this sits atop the Design Museum and is in Shad Thames makes this even more perfect. Taking a stroll before and after lunch, to see the museum treats or the waterside on a nice day, you could while away the hours very happily. I reccommend this place to almost anyone who I feel could enjoy it. Very relaxing and enjoyable.
