The best Greenwich restaurants

This cosy restaurant (which has Covent Garden and Brixton siblings) does exactly what it says on the tin, serving up a selection of grower Champagnes and exclusively French cheeses. Stop by here for a Champagne afternoon tea which features a tower of traditional macarons and a selection of cheeses, or visit later in the day when you can enjoy cheese and charcuterie boards and salads, as well as desserts such as cheesecake made in house.

Originally an import from America, this is now the third By Chloe site to open its doors in the English capital, following Covent Garden and Tower Bridge. By Chloe offers an entirely vegan menu of fast casual dishes such as a guacamole burger and Italian ‘meatballs’ made from mushrooms. There’s also a dedicated ‘London By Chloe’ menu section, which features vegan takes on classics like fish & chips, a tuna sandwich and sticky toffee pudding. 

Part of the Sticks n Sushi mini-chain, this Japanese restaurant is a celebration of all things fish, which is just as well considering its proximity to the Cutty Sark. When visiting, you can dive into California or black cod daikon sushi rolls, while those who aren’t in a fishy mood can opt for beef tataki or fried cauliflower topped with black truffle. There’s a kids menu too, while the sharing platters are great for groups.

A brewery may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a chic place to have dinner, but this bar and restaurant, which is set inside a former Victorian brewhouse, is rather chic. There are 60 beers to choose from, while the menu consists of British pub classics given contemporary twists – think bangers and mash with onion rings and IPA gravy, followed by sticky toffee pudding with pistachio ice cream.

This charming Mediterranean features vibrant artwork lining the walls and a patio garden where guests can relax in the warmer months. The menu features classic Mediterranean fare such as traditional paella and grilled Iberian pork fillets, while if you have got the little ones in tow, they can enjoy spaghetti in tomato sauce and cinnamon dusted churros for dessert. The considered wine list traverses Europe, while there are a handful of fun cocktails available too.

Open for coffees and all-day brunch, this outpost of The Gentleman Baristas (which has a handful of sites across London) is a good shout if you’re after your next avocado fix. Classic brunch dishes include poached eggs or avocado on toasted sourdough, while sweeter options include a pancake stack topped with bacon and maple syrup. To wash it all down, sip on the on-trend likes of a matcha latte or a red velvet hot chocolate.  

Boasting sites across the UK, Byron is an affordable burger joint which takes its inspiration from the casual diners found across America. The Greenwich location comes with a terrace that overlooks the River Thames, while the reliably decent menu features a range of burgers, including classic, cheese and double bacon options. Pad out your bun with sides such as halloumi fries and mac ‘n’ cheese balls, and don’t miss the sticky triple chocolate milkshake either. 

If you’re looking for a casual eat before watching an O2 show, Thunderbird Fried Chicken is a good shout. The brand originally started life as a street food concept, but now has this bricks and mortar restaurant which turns out wings, buckets and buns alongside milkshakes and beers. Some menu highlights include the Chipuffalo (fried chicken, buffalo sauce, chipotle sauce, pickles, blue cheese) and the meltdown fries, which are topped with jalapenos and miso cheese. 

Taking its name from one of London’s most famous maritime vessels, this cosy pub is now overseen by the Young's group and serves up beers, ales and wines from a well chosen list. The menu majors in above average pub grub, which means you can expect to enjoy the likes of a Devon crab and cod cake or an 8oz ribeye steak that’s been aged for 28 days. There are hearty roasts on Sundays too.

While Gaucho’s blingy interiors (including cowhide print chairs) may seem a bit 2009, its menu is bang up to date, featuring quality Argentinian steaks. Before heading off to see your favourite popstar, you can tuck into various cuts of free-range steak, as well as corn-fed chicken breast, Atlantic cod or pea and mint tortellini. Carry on the indulgence at dessert with a salted dulche de leche cheesecake, while sipping on wine from the exhaustive list. 

Burgers and beers go hand in hand like Kim and Kanye or salt and pepper and at this casual spot you can find both. There are 20 taps of craft beer to choose from, as well as a selection of stacked beef burgers topped with the likes of cheese and bacon. Non beer drinkers shouldn’t feel excluded, as there’s also a selection of house wines to choose from, as well as Prosecco for classy folk. 

Stretching across three storeys and featuring an outdoor terrace which overlooks Greenwich Park, this tavern is a good choice for a family day out or a gastropub dinner. There’s brunch and Sunday lunch at the weekends, while the main menu consists of a series of crowd-pleasers – think Cumberland sausages and mash, or mussels in garlic and white wine sauce served with fries. To quench your thirst, there’s an international wine list and plenty of lagers.

Serving the British classic of fish & chips, Hook is a real catch. Begin your meal with small plates such as fish tacos and hot chicken wings with garlic truffle mayonnaise, before tucking into the signature serve. If you’re not in the mood for fish & chips though, there are other options too – vegan tacos for example, or fried chicken coated in panko breadcrumbs which is served with Korean barbecue sauce and seaweed salted chips.
