Two kinds of northern spirit combine in this chunkily rustic and supremely snug basement bar-restaurant. Food and drink from Poland, Russia and the Baltics is the speciality, so expect plenty of vodka. Debowa Polska, Stoli and Sobieski appear in numerous cocktails, and are also loaded into a machine gun-style delivery system for those times when shot glasses just won’t do. Lithuanian beer and Moldovan wine complete the temptingly unusual drinks list. To eat, wild boar, Baltic sausages and venison are seared on a traditional shashlik charcoal grill, but soups such as borscht or sorrel soup also feature: served, fittingly, with sour cream and a barm cake. Alongside creamy chopped salads you’ll find a wealth of heartier dishes too, including Latvian grey peas with bacon, stuffed cabbage and, at weekends, Lithuanian cepelinai potato dumplings filled with minced chicken and served with bacon in a cream sauce. Just the thing for winter.
