Based in what used to be the Elephant’s Head pub on Lower Clapton Road, A Slice of Blue is a hip new pizza and drinking bar with a focus on ‘pizza, beats & brew’. A joint project between Santa Maria founders Pasquale Chionchio and Angelo Ambrosio, and Edin Basic who founded Firezza, A Slice of Blue offers classic pizzas exclusively from Santa Maria in a lively, bar-like atmosphere.
Adding to the relaxed vibe of the place, the bar also regularly plays host to a range of live performances, from rappers and poets to DJs and singers, making A Slice of Blue a great spot to visit whether you’re wanting good food or just a fun evening.
The bright blue façade of the bar means that it stands out from the other more muted establishments on either side whilst still looking somewhat like a traditional boozer. However, once you head on inside, the decor is hipster through and through – the stripped-down walls feature a selection of pictures and paintings of musicians, the DJ decks sit at one end and then there’s the striking blue-tiled pizza oven down the other.
When it comes to food, you’ll recognize the Santa Maria pizzas as they’re the same on offer at their four London pizzerias. There are a number of different options available including the San Carmela which features cotto ham, mushrooms and parmesan on a tomato and mozzarella base, or the less conventional Santa Maria – smoked mozzarella, nduja and rare-breed Yorkshire sausage served on a pumpkin base.
Accompanying the pizzas and the live music, the drinks list is largely focused around craft beers, mostly from local East London breweries, which come both on tap and by the bottle. There is also a selection of other drinks available including wine and of course soft drinks too.
