Referencing the birth of the Industrial Revolution in Manchester, 1761 is a new £1m venue set over two floors. The elegant 130-cover restaurant serves modern British dishes with a nod to the city’s history, while downstairs Lily’s Bar (named after Lily Bollinger) feels like stepping back in time, with hand-crafted furnishings, comfortable chesterfields and sparkling chandeliers. A handy lunch offer includes snacks of deep-fried popcorn cockles, homemade pork scratchings and oysters as well as open sandwiches and salads, while the full all-day menu brings hearty dishes with a regional spin: we enjoyed comforting corned beef hash topped with an oozing fried egg, and battered haddock (spiked with locally distilled Three Rivers gin) alongside chunky beef-dripping chips and ‘Manchester caviar’ (aka mushy peas). The drinks list offers historically inspired cocktails as well as Bollinger Champagnes, wines by the glass, beers and spirits – including some Mancunian names. An enticing city-centre venue bursting with genuine Mancunian pride.
