SquareMeal Review of Dalloway Terrace

Bronze Award

The Bloomsbury Hotel made a canny move in converting its terrace into a new restaurant: the result is beautiful. A corridor of covered dining tables along the building’s side is dressed with twinkling fairy lights and (plastic) foliage under a retractable canvas roof. The setting virtually screams afternoon tea. Dinner choices are taken from the all-day menu and include daily changing, international specials such as lobster and crayfish mac 'n' cheese. Seafood and salads are fortes, our prawn cocktail arriving in a Martini glass stuffed with big juicy specimens. Extended waits between courses suggest a stretched kitchen, but staff remain charming. Don’t miss the classic desserts such as lemon tart with spiced plum puree; the Champagne cocktails and helpfully categorised wines are equally refined – if pricey. Patio heaters, decent food and pretty surroundings make this a cockle-warming experience.

Something really different for Edinburgh to have Indian cuisine that wasn't just a korma and tikka massala etc. The atmosphere and decor reflects this too. The food is excellent and service is good when you are in the restaurant (staff are very knowledgeable about menu and the Dishoom brand overall) although you cannot book a table for less than 6 people which is quite frustrating.

Woolf it up
If Virginia Woolf, or indeed her namesake Mrs Dalloway were still with us now, i'm fairly confident that they would be more than happy to take tea in the Dalloway Terrace. Newly opened in the Bloomsbury Hotel, I'm almost reluctant to reveal this hidden gem to too many people. With a retractable roof, like Wimbledon's Centre Court, the inclement British weather won't stop this restaurant from serving fine food and cocktails, rain or shine. The elegant, conservatory-like surroundings (with optional blanket for the knees should you want it) are the perfect setting in which to enjoy the well presented and delicious food. I had smoked salmon with guinness bread to start (a dark, moist, tasty bread) followed by the lemon sole (thankfully they give you the option to have on or off the bone, and I was happy to wimp out and let them do the fiddly work). Somehow I found room for the dessert which was a pretty special chocolate fondant. All this washed down with champagne cocktails and a very respectably priced house white. I can't wait for the sun to come out so I can go back to try out their brunch menu.
