SquareMeal Review of The Wet Fish Cafe

Bronze Award

From the early 1900s these premises really were a West Hampstead ‘wet fish shop’, and the current owners have restored some of the building’s original features – including lovely art-deco wall tiles. Seafood is still the main business, although it’s now transformed into modern-sounding dishes such as scallops with sautéed cabbage, raisins, pine nuts and anchovy oil, Cornish cod tempura with pea-crushed potatoes or Loch Duart salmon with beluga lentils, spinach, asparagus and creamy wild garlic sauce. Meat eaters and veggies also get a look in (think Turkish lamb stew or pistachio pilaf), while desserts could bring rhubarb and almond crumble with blueberry ice cream. Early-bird menus, weekend brunch and ‘epic’ weekday lunch deals (one dish plus a drink for £9) help to keep demand high, likewise occasional live gigs and art exhibitions. To drink, don’t miss the signature WFC Martini – otherwise check out the lively selection of Italian and New World wines.
